PHS capacitors for high voltage management applications
Kemet has released the T550 and T551 series Polymer Hermetic Seal (PHS) capacitors. The components have been designed for high voltage management applications and feature conductive organic polymer as the cathode plate of the capacitor instead of the traditionally used MnO2 or wet electrolyte. This is said to result in low ESR and improved capacitance retention at high frequency and low temperature.
The devices are claimed to provide the highest total capacitance and the most economical solution for high power applications, up to 80V, within a 25% lighter package than the equivalent wet tantalum capacitor.
T550/T551 series capacitors exhibit a benign failure mode which is said to eliminate the case breach that can occur in wet tantalum types. Additionally, the parts may be operated at voltages up to 80% of rated voltage with equivalent or better reliability than traditional MnO2 or wet tantalum capacitors. T550/T551 Series PHS are also said to benefit from higher ripple current handling capability and a lower ESR range than wet tantalums.
The PGS capacitors are available in MIL–PRF–39006/22/25/30/31 case sizes and are suitable for use in harsh environments and 48V applications.
